Concordância: como fica o verbo em inglês?

O simple present é um dos poucos momentos em que o verbo em inglês é conjugado. E só com he, she e it. Outro momento é no passado do verbo to be (was e were).

Agora, se não tiver “he, “she” ou “it”, você sempre sabe se está no singular? Quando é que conjugamos o verbo? Vamos ver as regras:

Um sujeito no singular precisa de verbo no singular.

Our fence divides the houses.

Atenção: o que vem depois de “of” não conta como sujeito.
A bouquet of flowers was delivered here.
An army of kids is asking for candy.
The colors of the rainbow are beautiful.

Dois sujeitos independentes interligados por and viram plural.

A dog and a cat were messing in our backyard.
A teacher and a student are talking in there.

Dois sujeitos singulares interligados por or, either/or ou neither/nor requerem um verbo singular:

My aunt or my mom is baking our cake.
Neither Maria nor João knows the way back.
Either Valmir or Pietra takes care of the schedule.

Se um dos sujeitos na frase com or, either/or ou neither/nor for plural, o verbo concorda com o sujeito mais próximo a ele.

The boss or the employees write the memo for us.
Neither the books nor the magazine is here now.

Pessoas extras separadas por parênteses ou por expressões como along with, as well as, besides, entre outras, não são consideradas parte do sujeito.

The expert, along with the assistants, is going to be here for the session.
Karen (and her best friend) was always around.

Com as expressões half of, none of e all of, o verbo combina com o objeto após a preposição “of”.

All of the team goes by bus.
None of the schools are open.

Com pronomes indefinidos como everybody, someone, nowhere, o verbo fica no singular.

Someone is here to see you.
Everybody wants to rule the world.

Com os pronomes few, many, several, both, all e some, o verbo fica no plural.

Few are interested in coming to the meeting.
Some want to go to the mall.

Coletivos, em geral, são usados no singular.

The colony of ants works together.

Títulos de filmes, livros, séries são vistos como singular.

“Friends” is a very popular TV show.
