【英語の文法】lastとlatterとlatest

英語の単語が同じような発音とスペルで、意味が違う場合には本当に混乱しますよね。lastとlatterとlatestはちょうどよい例です。私の大学の生徒でさえ、この3つの単語には苦労させられていますので、今回は、いつ、どのように使えばよいのかを覚えるための簡単な例文をご紹介しましょう。

【last】

lastは比較的理解しやすい単語で、単純にfirstの反対の意味で使用します。

例：
– “He came last at the Badminton tournament.”
– “She was the last to arrive for dinner.”
過去のある時期のことを話すときに使うこともできます。

例：
– “I went to Shanghai last week.”
– “Last month she went to summer school.”

【latter】

次にlatterですが、終わりに近いときや、最終的な段階にかかっているときに、何かが起こることを表すのに使われます。

例：
– “Fashion became more colourful in the latter half of the decade.”
一連の項目中、最後のものを示す際に使うこともできます。

例：
Aさん: “There are so many different opinions on the film. Some people say that the film was good, some say it was OK, terrible or even the worst thing ever.”
Bさん: “I agree with the latter.“
これはBさんが、その映画が今まで見た中で一番worst thingだったと思う人たちに同意するという意味です。

【latest】

latestは、つい最近という意味で、ニュースの話をする際によく使用されます。
例：
– “Here is the latest news from China.”

他にも例文を2つ挙げておきます。
– “The chairman was the latest to announce his resignation.”
– “She’s interested in the latest music from Korea.”

完全に理解してしまえば、これら3つはお互いに区別しやすい単語です。少し練習すれば、あなたも日常英話の会話で十分使いこなせる段階に到達できますよ！
