你的”期待”對嗎？ look forward to 和 expect 的差異｜EF ENGLISH LIVE部落格

對中文對這兩個字詞的解說都和”期待”相關，但其實兩者語意有差距，用法也大不相同喔~

look forward to  　期待、盼望

當你熱切盼望，期待某個人或事的到來，希望它趕快發生、通常是好事具正面的意義時，就用look forward to 來表達。而且要注意的是，to 在這個片語動詞中是介系詞，後面要接名詞(n.)或動名詞(Ving)，而不是原形動詞(V.)，很容易搞混喔~ 如果你希望自己把這句英文說對，那就要特別留意了~

(O) I’m looking forward to seeing Annie again.
(X) I’m looking forward to see Annie again.
我很期待再次見到Annie

(O) We look forward to hearing from you soon.
(X) We look forward to hear from you soon.
我們希望能夠很快得您的回覆

(O) Carrie is looking forward to her vacation .
(X) Carrie is looking forward for her vacation .
Carrie很期待她的假期

expect  預計、預期、預料

這個字並不是期盼某件事的到來，而是已預先知道、 已清楚明白某件事將會發生，自己心裡有數，已有所準備，對於將要到來的事已在預料當中了。

I’m expecting a call / a visitor.
我在等一通電話/一位訪客

I didn’t expect to see you here !
我沒有預期會在這裡見到你 !

House prices are expected to rise sharply this year.
今年房價預計會急遽地上漲

As expected, the project was a great success.
如同原先預期的，這計畫很成功

anticipate  預計、預期、預料

這個字和expect都是動詞，而且語義相近，在很多情境下都可以通用，也表示對將會發生的事已有預期，心理上已有所準備，對可能發生的正面或負面的事都已在預料當中。

We anticipate that sales will rise next quarter.
我們預期下一季的業績將會上揚

Are you anticipating lots of people at the party tonight?
你預計今晚的聚會有很多人會來嗎?

They anticipate having plenty of applicants for the job.
他們預料將有很多人申請這個工作

The building will be completed around three months earlier than anticipated.
這大樓將會比原先預期的早3個月蓋好
